Dr. Jaiwon Shin from NASA gives lecture in Toronto

Dr. Jaiwon Shin, NASA Associate Administrator for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate visited Toronto.
His lecture was held at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education Auditorium following the opening ceremony for 2018 UofT Korea Week on October 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
He shared his insight under the theme ‘21st Century Innovation’ in the presence of invited guests, Toronto University students and general audience.
He says that the first industrial revolution by water and wind heled for physical strength and the second industrial revolution using electrical power could reduce human labour. And the third industrial revolution was made by computers, called ‘digital revolution.
“21st convergence of technologies come with digital revolution, convergence of technologies and new business models.”
“No more boundaries.” He added, “We have no idea. In coming years, technology will lead in the society.”
He says that innovation is not something like but it comes with culture, colleague and whole team work.
“You have to be able to communicate.” he stressed.
Dr. Jaiwon Shin is the Associate Administrator for the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. He was appointed to this position in February 2008. In this position, he manages the agency’s aeronautics research portfolio with an annual budget of 685 million dollars (in fiscal year 2018) and guides its strategic direction.
Dr. Shin co-chairs the White House National Science & Technology Council’s Future Transportation Subcommittee. Dr. Shin also co-chairs the USAF/NASA Executive Research Committee (ERC), which facilitates the highest level of coordination of common research needs and partnership between United States Air Force and NASA Aeronautics.
Dr. Shin received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia in 1989. He studied mechanical engineering at Yonsei University in Korea in 1982. After that, he went to U.S.A, where he obtained his master’s degree is in mechanical engineering from the California State University, Long Beach in 1985.
Dr. Shin’s dream came true. At the age of 10, he started to envision such a kind of dream of working for NASA as he watched the scene that Apollo 11 landed on the Moon for the first time.
