Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today that Russian forces had taken control of the site of the country’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), but that the nuclear power plant continued to be operated by its regular staff and there had been no release of radioactive material, IAEA Director General Rafael Mario Grossi said in a statement on situation in Ukraine.
Ukrainian counterparts informed the IAEA that a projectile overnight had hit a training building in the vicinity of one of the plant’s reactor units, causing a localized fire that was later extinguished.
The safety systems of the plant’s six reactors had not been affected and there has been no release of radioactive material. But two people were reported injured.
Today, on Mar. 04, UN and NATO held a special meeting to discuss the situation of Ukraine.
The UN SecurityCouncil had an emergency meeting on the situation of the nuclear power plant Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. The UN_HRC agreed to establish a commission to investigate violations committed during Russia’s military attack on Ukraine. 32 countries voted in favour of the resolution, Russia and Eritrea voted against it, while 13 nations abstained.
NATO Foreign Ministers held an extraordinary meeting today in Brussels to address the escalating crisis in Ukraine. Ministers condemned Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and expressed solidarity and support for the courage of the Ukrainian people and armed forces.
“We call on President Putin to stop this war immediately, withdraw his forces from Ukraine, and engage in diplomacy now.” said Secretary General Jens Stoltenber.
They addressed NATO’s immediate response to the crisis. In addition to the thousands more troops that Allies have already sent to the eastern part of the Alliance, NATO is deploying its Response Force for the first time, it has over 130 jets at high alert and over 200 ships from the High North to the Mediterranean.
