TOFINO, BC – The Honourable Yonah Martin joined Korea War Veterans, Consul General Byung-won Chung, local dignitaries, members of the Canadian military and members of the Korean Canadian community of BC to commemorate the 68th Anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong.
The Battle of Kapyong ceremony is held annually in beautiful Tofino, BC at the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve of Canada, a park was twinned in 1997 with its Korean sister Hallyo Haesang Sea National Park of Korea. The Battle of Kapyong took place in April 1951, and to this day marks a historic victory for the Princess Patricias Light Infantry (PPCLI) and all Canadians who served in Korea. Although greatly outnumbered, Canadian soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of PPCLI defended Kapyong Hill against the Communist oppressors and successfully prevented the enemies from advancing further.
“It’s an honour for me to once again be in attendance today to pay tribute to the Canadian heroes who withstood the communist offensive on the Hills of Kapyong 68 years ago. Today we remember the sacrifices made to protect the rights and freedoms of the Korean people. To our beloved veterans, I would not be here today if it were not for your selfless service in Korea. Today we honour you and take a moment to remember your fallen comrades who paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for Korea, the country of my birth,” said Senator Martin.
