The 2020 Ontario Summer Games in London will welcome over 3,400 participants and their families, and feature 19 events.
Ontario is supporting the 2021 Canada Games by committing to a cost-shared investment of $29 million for the construction of new sport facilities, which will support athletes and bring new jobs to Niagara region.
“Ontario’s athletes are among the best in Canada — and the world,” said Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “Thanks to the commitment from our sport partners at Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and Coaches Association of Ontario, our athletes will continue to deliver world-class performances on the international stage like they did at the 2019 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.”
An $8.2 million investment in CSIO over two years will provide top-quality training and development to emerging or existing Canadian Olympic or Paralympic Team members and many of Ontario’s provincial sport organizations. The CAO will receive $1.1 million this year to support coach education, training and professional development.
“On behalf of Canadian Sport Institute Ontario, I would like to thank the Government of Ontario for their continued support and funding of CSIO and high-performance sport in Ontario,” said Debbie Low, President and CEO, Canadian Sport Institute Ontario. “The financial support provided by the Government of Ontario directly funds CSIO’s Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative program, which includes supporting key CSIO staff positions, and 36 coaching and technical leadership roles at PSOs across Ontario. The recent results by Ontario and CSIO affiliated athletes at the 2019 Pan and Parapan Am Games are a testament to the funding and support we receive in the Ontario sport system.”
“On behalf of the Coaches Association of Ontario, we would like to thank the Government of Ontario for their ongoing support,” said Jeremy Cross, Executive Director of the Coaches Association of Ontario. “From their first experience in sport, to their peak performances, Ontario’s athletes are supported by years of work by dedicated coaches. We are proud of the significant role coaches play in the development of athletes across the province.”
“Ontario offers the world in one province, making it one of the best places to live, train and compete as an athlete,” said Minister MacLeod. “Our government will continue to support athletes in their pursuit of excellence, and we look forward to celebrating their success at the 2020 Ontario Summer Games.”
