President Moon Jae-in on Feb. 7 pledged his “unsparing interest and support” so that the proposed inter-Korean hosting of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games can help both Koreas gain the right to hold the 2032 Summer Olympics.
He said this in a message to the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Peace Forum at PyeongChang Alpensia Convention Center in Pyeongchang-gun County, Gangwon-do Province.
The first step toward peace on the Korean Peninsula, which began in the county, continued to the United Nations truce village of Panmunjeom, Pyeongyang and Baekdusan Mountain, he added, and fostered hope of the two Koreas eventually becoming one.
The president called Pyeongchang’s hosting of the 2018 Winter Olympics “a moment of happiness and joy for Koreans and people around the world” that remains vivid in his memory.
He said the forum seeks a path toward peace and co-prosperity through public diplomacy in economics, sports and a peaceful Demilitarized Zone, adding that his administration will carefully listen to the insight and wisdom of forum participants to gain a strong force for the peace process on the peninsula.
Founded in 2019, the forum is held every year in early February to commemorate the PyeongChang Olympics. This year’s edition began on Feb. 7 for a three-day run at the convention center both in online and offline forms.
