To revitalize consumption shrunken by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Korea will hold from June 26 to July 12 a large-scale nationwide sales event dubbed unofficially “Korea Together Sale.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-ki on June 28 announced a plan for the sale in the fifth Meeting of the Central Economic Response Headquarters.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance said the event will be held safely under tight disinfection measures, and will begin at shopping sites around Sungnyemun Gate, also known as Namdaemun, in central Seoul before being expanded nationwide in phases.
Over the event period, the sale will feature special sales both online and offline at shopping venues, provide discount coupons and offer vouchers issued by entities in regions. “Korea Gourmet,” a dining discount event, will target Korean restaurants, and “Special Travel Week” is also slated from June 20 to July 19.
Minister Hong said the upcoming sales event is the nation’s first large-scale discount event to be held in the year’s first half. He said this event is equivalent to “Korea Sale Festa,” the country’s largest annual shopping event.
He said he hopes this year’s festival will alleviate difficulties felt by retailers, wholesalers and small and medium businesses caused by COVID-19, such as restricted movement, reduced turnover and difficulties in finding new markets, as well as offer more chances to boost consumption.
