Nearly 10,000 Japanese have signed the online signature campaign “Is Korea the enemy” in Japan more than a month after the drive was started by intellectuals in that country to urge the retraction of export restrictions on Korea.

The campaign organizers on Aug. 31 said a combined 9,463 Japanese had signed since the drive began on July 25, with the number of visitors to the website also exceeding 260,000.

Another 4,000 comments posted on the site supported the campaign.

One comment said, “Applying economic pressure to another country’s main industry is not ethical behavior,” while another said, “When Japan honestly reflects on its past mistakes, bilateral dialogue is possible.”

Major Japanese media said many Japanese still agree with the export restrictions on Korea. Yet given indications of prolonged bilateral tension and conflict, however, a shift toward the adoption of a more rational and objective view of the situation is gradually rising in Japan.
